Ωστόσο μια μερίδα της κριτικής διατύπωσε αρκετές επιφυλάξεις, όχι τόσο για το ταλέντο της και τον επαγγελματισμό της όσο για τους μανιερισμούς και τα στερεότυπα που εισήγαγε στον χώρο του θεάματος. Παρά τις όποιες αδυναμίες της, η Βουγιουκλάκη όχι απλώς ως ηθοποιός αλλά ως είδωλο κατέληξε να αντιπροσωπεύει καλύτερα από κάθε άλλο καλλιτέχνη μια ολόκληρη εποχή της μεταπολεμικής Ελλάδας που έχει πολιτογραφηθεί στην κοινή συνείδηση ως η εποχή της νεότητας και της αθωότητας

Ο Νέλσον Μαντέλα (Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela) γεννήθηκε στις 18 Ιουλίου του 1918 στην Τράνσκεΐ της Νότιας Αφρικής. Δικηγόρος στο Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ, έγινε μέλος του ANC το 1944.Πηγε στο Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ επειδη οι γονεις του ηθελαν να τον παντρεψουν χωρις να το θελει αυτος. Για 20 χρόνια τέθηκε επικεφαλής στη μεγάλη εκστρατεία κατά της ρατσιστικής πολιτικής της κυβέρνησης της Νότιας Αφρικής. Ήταν ο πρώτος έγχρωμος, δημοκρατικά εκλεγμένος πρόεδρος της Νότιας Αφρικής. Πριν να εκλεγεί πρόεδρος, ήταν από τους επικεφαλείς του κινήματος κατά του Άπαρτχαϊντ και ενεργό μέλος του Εθνικού Αφρικανικού Κογκρέσου ANC (African National Congress). Φυλακίστηκε για 27 χρόνια από το καθεστώς των λευκών. Ο Νέλσον Μαντέλα αποφυλακίστηκε το Φεβρουάριο του 1990, αφού ο πρόεδρος Φρεντερίκ ντε Κλερκ αναγνώρισε το Αφρικανικό Εθνικό Κογκρέσο και ανέστειλε τις εκτελέσεις. Η απελευθέρωσή του το 1990 σημάδεψε την απαρχή θεμελιακών αλλαγών στο αφρικανικό κράτος, που οδήγησαν στην πτώση του ρατσιστικού του καθεστώτος. Έγινε ο πρώτος πρόεδρος του αφρικάνικου λαού το 1994. Κατέκτησε το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης που το μοιράστηκε με τον Φρεντερίκ Ντε Κλερκ.
Έχασε τον ένα γιο του από AIDS και τον άλλο σε τροχαίο ατύχημα, το 1969 (σε τροχαίο έχασε και τη δισέγγονή του, το 2010). Από τότε ο Νέλσον Μαντέλα έγινε εξαιρετικά δραστήριος κατά του AIDS. Ο ίδιος δηλώνει ότι ο μόνος τρόπος να αναδείξουμε το AIDS ως φυσιολογική ασθένεια είναι να μην το κρύβουμε και να κάνουμε τους ανθρώπους να σταματήσουν να το θεωρούν κάτι που χτυπά ορισμένα άτομα τα οποία πηγαίνουν στην κόλαση και όχι στον παράδεισο».
